North Korea has accused the United States of being "determined to carry out its aggressive plans" against it despite a recent agreement by the two countries on resuming negotiations on Pyongyang's nuclear file.
North Korea's representative to the United Nations said on Wednesday that the United States was "obsessed with sanctions."
The escalation comes only days after the historic meeting between the leaders of the two countries in the fortified demilitarized zone separating the North and South Koreas.
President Donald Trump has become the first US president to set foot in North Korea.
After nearly an hour of talks, the two leaders agreed to form specialized teams to resume stalled negotiations on Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament.
But the recent North Korean statement points to a change in the tone of dialogue and a return to the era when the two sides exchanged angry insults and angry remarks that spoiled relations between the two countries.
North Korea also accused the United States of trying to "undermine the peace climate" on the Korean Peninsula.
What did Pyongyang say?
The North Korean representative to the United Nations said it only responded to the US claim that it (ie Pyongyang) violated the upper limit of its imports of refined oil products, which was imposed in 2017.
North Koreans also said they were responding to a joint letter from the United States, France, Germany and Britain to all UN member states calling for more sanctions on Pyongyang.
In its letter, the four Western countries requested the United Nations Member States to expel and repatriate the North Korean workers they were working in.
"What can not be overlooked is that this message game was carried out on the same day that President Trump proposed a summit meeting (with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un)," the North Korean statement said.
"This proves the fact that the United States is more determined than ever to carry out its aggressive intentions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)," he said.
"All United Nations Member States should be vigilant about the intended attempts of the United States to undermine the climate of peace created on the Korean peninsula," the North Korean representative said.
It was "ridiculous" for the United States to consider sanctions as "a cure for all problems".
The Americans have yet to respond to the North Korean statement.
What is the status of relations between North Korea and the United States?
Negotiations between the United States and North Korea, aimed at persuading Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program, peaked last year when Kim and Trump held their summit in Singapore.
At that summit, the two leaders vowed to "fully disarm" the Korean Peninsula, but without giving any details on the meaning of that pledge.
It was hoped that the second meeting between the two leaders - which took place in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi in February - a concrete agreement on North Korea's abandonment of its nuclear weapons programs in return for lifting some of the sanctions imposed on them.
But the Hanoi talks did not lead to any agreement, as both sides differed on the pace at which the sanctions should be lifted. Since then negotiations have been stalled, although the two leaders have continued to exchange letters.
In their meeting in the demilitarized zone on Sunday, they were largely confined to exchanging greetings and praise.
Trump, who once described Kim as "the little rocket man," described his friendship with the North Korean leader as "exceptionally great" and said his meeting with Kim was "a great day for the whole world."
